Can I get any help if I give up my job ?!

Hi

Me, hubby and 2 kids......

Hubby was self employed in new build housing which has dried up and he now claims job seekers.

I have worked same place for 10 years and hate it with a passion on the verge of leaving (i know i know) but does anyone know if we will get any benefits or if i walk out does that stop me getting everything ?

Ive got a mortgage and debts

Thanks

If you have paid enough NI in the relevant years you can claim contribution based JSA for upto 6 months but if you walk out of your job without good cause you are likely to be santioned. This can be between 2 and 26 weeks.

You may get penalised for 6 months, benefit wise if you walk out.

I can't believe you'd rather be on benefits than working, especially in the current economic climate they are not a life choice, their for people who have no other option. You do, you have a choice of working.

If its so bad, look for other jobs now, and apply for them whilst you're still in work. After all, you'd have to look for a job whilst on JSA anyway, why not just do it now?

The job is a complete nightmare and yes I would prefer to be unemployed than remain there, current climate or not. However I am looking for other jobs and completly want to work, im not out to sit about and claim benefits.

I just want to know what I covered for incase I have to walk out - I am 34 and have worked full time since 16 and never claimed.

when i walked out of a job a few years back i was told i couldnt claim anything for 12 weeks, luckily i had some savings to cover me, but found a new job a couple of weeks later. its not a good idea to make yourself unemployed, although it may be different with somebody with kids

As the family bread winner and with debts, I'd think very carefully about just walking out of a job, however much you dislike it. I don't think that you realise how tight money will be on benefits and how there will be no help with repaying your debts. You won't even get any help with the mortgage for 3 months.

Even if they gave you JSA, you are looking at roughly £94 a week for the couple rate, £86 a week child tax credits and your child benefit of £33.

After the set period you would only receive help with your mortgage interest.

You wouldn't pay council tax but it's still not a lot to live on if you have large debts to repay and run a car for example.

Start looking in earnest now and get yourself a more enjoyable job - if you've gone that long I'm sure you can stick it a while longer.

What type of work do you do?

    Good luck!

I'm sure you'll find something, even in the current situation. Hating your job is a wonderful incentive to finding another one!
    Good luck.
