Didn't SORN car 6 years ago - now wish to scrap it
Options
Not getting a "round tuit" , I didn't SORN a very old and worthless car in 2003. DVLA didn't notice this and have not contacted me about this car since. I now wish to scrap the car. Since DVLA must be notified of this they are going to find out that the car still exists and it seems possible that I will get a fine.
Do I have any options other than scrapping it and informing DVLA? (I mean apart from keeping it eternally in the garage where it has been since 2003)

We had an old car which is a classic when the new system came in (garaged & unroadworthy). I phoned the DVLA & they said as it was not on the system it didn't need any paperwork until it was road worthy. Give them a call & discuss your options.

or cut it up with an angle grinder and put a little in your wheely bin every week.
A year or two and it'll be all gone0 -
The actual SORN fines (£80 letters) only came in in 2006, although the legislation has been in place since 1998.
So if you've been off road since 2003, then it's unlikely a fine has been issued.
Just scrap car and send off appropriate part of logbook with letter to explain it's been off road since x time.

If they don't know you have got it.
As "vaio" said. Cut it up or phone a scrap dealer to take it away.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
You'll be fine I've got an old motorbike that aint been taxed since 1979.
If they catch me I'm bankrupt :shocked:0 -
so what happened as I'm in a similar position....
my partner has a car which was last SORN'd in 2005, the car is worthless and needs scrapping. it has been off the road since 2005, and we have moved house in the process. the car has been off the road all the time.
any ideas what dvla and the wonderful system are likely to do???0 -
Why DO people keep scrap cars for years??0

Second the angle grinder, done a car in 2 days with a grinder then just put it in the scrap metal skips in the dump.0

I had a similar problem this month.
I bought an untaxed car in 2008 and didn't SORN it. I realised last month that I had made a mistake. The car has no engine and has been on private land the whole time so I have never used it unlicensed but it just slipped my mind to SORN it.
If I was you I would just scrap the vehicle and not mention the SORN. I declared SORN on mine and sent an explanatory letter to DVLA. They fined me for back payment of tax (about £172). Luckily after another letter and a word with my local DVLA Office they have waived the arrears, but I got the impression from them that had I just SORNd it quietly I would have gotten away with it.
Good luck with it!0
