Hi guys,
Just how do you do it? I'm aware that information you think you have deleted can still be on there so I don't just want to take it to the tip?
What can I do?
Thanks S_C

I know this sounds stupid but hit it with a large hammer. Take the HDD's out and do your best! Burn it, throw it, plug it into 240v mains, give it a bath, unscrew the screws, melt it with nitrous oxide.
Chances of anyone ever getting the data off the HDD is............none.0 -
You could use something like this which is free I believe -> http://www.linux-kurser.dk/secure_harddisk_eraser.html0

The only thing you need to think about destroying is your hard drive, everything else is safe and won't be able to tell anyone anything.
You can destroy the hard drive using software like Eraser (http://www.heidi.ie/eraser) or physically using a drill.
Once you have done this I would take it to a local computer recycler (your council should be able to direct your to one). There are lots of places that make good use of old computers rather than throwing them away.0 -
how old is this old computer? i know there are plenty of people who'd want a free PC just for web browsing, word etc. any idea what the specs are?0

We had quite a good thread going yesterday on exactly this subject. [thread=46019]VIEW IT HERE[/thread].I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

I think monitors are now classified as hazardous waste.
Does anyone know how these are are supposed to be "thrown away"?
I have a large monitor which is faulty that I need to dispose of. I would normally have just taken it down the landfill site, but I'm not sure this is allowed now.0 -
Take it to your council dumpTo infinity and beyond!0

If you are a business then you will need to pay to have it disposed of as Hazardous Waste. You will need to ensure that whoever you take it to is licenced to accept hazardous waste. If they collect from you they will need to be registerd waste carriers as well. Under the Duty of Care requirements you are obliged to only use registered carriers and obtain a waste transfer note.
If you are a householder then you can take it free of charge to your local Civic Amenity Site (or whatever term your local waste authority uses for what is generally known as the “local dump”), here you can deposit it as directed by the site staff.0 -
Thanks for the info. Yes I'm a householder, and pleased to see that I can still take it to the local tip free of charge.
