Abbey taking forever to open accounts?

I seem to been banging my head against a wall trying to give my money to Abbey. All they have to do is open the no-overdraft-required account and the cash is theirs and at a very reasonable low rate, plus as a bonus I have not even credit checked them before agreeing to lend them this money.
Application was made online on the 25th March and so far I have heard nothing despite ringing up 2 times to check if there has been any progress. Todays call centre staff was as unhelpful as the last one.
Ironically, as I will be lending them cash, they seem to want to credit check me again. I wonder how many banks would actually pass a credit check in the recent months past?
I'm also not sure who runs the worst business is... Abbey or the postal service?
Abbey say I should get the decision letter in the post in the next 7-10 days, so there goes the 1st class stamp into oblivion! Instant collectors item.
No wonder these banks are so screwed up.

Abbey/Santander would indeed pass a credit check seeing as they about the only bank not bailed out and making profits. However the head office does not function and is simply !!!!!!!g useless.0

Spanish banks are starting to feel the effects - there's a lot of money tied up in the construction industry over there. I don't think it's any worse than any other bank, but just thought people should know all the facts0

Over the last year I have had nothing but problems with them.
Opening three accounts - all experienced difficulties
 Communication - none
 Moving money online - blocked
Closing one of the accounts - one month and counting
Potentailly closing the two ISAs - don't want to think about it.
The worst customer service I've ever experienced. They have become too big and do not have the systems in place to cope.0

I'm not so sure about that, Santander have been hit badly in the South American markets.
One Spanish Bank was in deep trouble just last week.
I agree that they are useless.
Why anybody uses them by choice is beyond me.0
