Sky HD - can we cancel??

I am wondering what people think about our situation with Sky as my OH is ready to blow!

We treated ourselves to the Sky HD upgrade as an early christmas present to go with the new TV. Our 5th sky HD box died last night during the middle of a program - was our stupid fault we dared to be watching a recorded program when another program was due to start recording - should have learnt that mistake from the 3rd box. We have lost all the films/programs we had stored on the box (again).

Now I am trying to work out is how much more nonsense should we be putting up with from Sky? They are refusing to let us cancel the subscription as we still have 7 months of the contract to run but it is getting seriously annoying to have to schedule the engineers to keep coming around not to mention losing all the programs. How many box replacements is considered acceptable? Is there anything we can do?

I cannot wait to get back to my faithul Sky plus box!

how much time from the period of ownership have you lost because of this?

I would suggest that if they are saying a withdrawal from yourselves is a breach of contract, then in turn, them not being able to offer a consistent, long standing period of HD, is also a breach.

what's wrong with the box, is it the same issue each time?
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

Its because we are not really buying the boxes in the same way that you would buy a DVD player from a shop. We all tend to get the box direct from Sky and get a subsidised rate for it or in some cases free. We have no choice over which box they supply and even when in my case I did buy my own box (a pace), they had to replace it due to the board design fault and they gave me a Thompson which lasted a day. The manufacturers of the boxes do not have to respond directly to us. We contact Sky they replace the box, box goes back gets fixed and the next poor sod is given it. Sky use refurbs as replacements a lot of the time and we put up with it. If say my PS3 failed I would expect the replacement to be new not a refurb. The box manufacturers don't have to answer to us, just Sky and Sky let them away with shoddy machine manufacturing. If the same percentage of say DVD players were being return to Comet or Currys, they would soon stop stocking them.

It amazes me that there have been so many problems. Mine very ocasionally gets confused and fails to record anything, but it's also a few years old! We have three in the house and all are very overused but working just fine.

My friend is on his 5th HD box. The first one went after 10 months. He has been told that the replacements only have a 3 month warranty. Unfortunately the other 3 did not last more than 6 weeks. His 5th is now 4 weeks old. He is considering making the appointment now for when it goes because it always takes 2 weeks for an appointment.
