Child savings

Options
I have a small savings account for each of my grandchildren that they will receive when they are 18. They are independant of the government trust fund as they were in exeistence before that was dreamed up. The eldest grandchild is coming up to 18 now and I want to give him a cheque for the amount. The bank are wanting to transfer the account to his name but that requires his siganture, birth cert. etc - and takes out the surprise of the gift. The accounts are in my name and are 'in trust for' each child. At present, I can move the money around and I am just wondering if it will be possible (or legal) to transfer it to my account and write a cheque to my grandson, enabling him to put it iinto his own bank account rather than force him to open another account in another bank?
Anyone have any ideas please?
