Well I have been to both in May and both times we had about 5 days of rain, the rest of the time, glorious. May/June isn't meant to be the rainy season - I was told that was July/August so we might have been unlucky but if I was to go back I would probably go between November and March to be on the safe side.
Flight is about 8-9 hours.Leo James arrived 7 days late on 26th August 2011 by emergency CS :j Such a cheeky chappy now :T0 -

Just back from Cuba. Had a great time.
From my research this time of year is best, from about early march to late may. These are the lowest rainfall months, and with pleasant temperatures. Jan/feb can be a little cool. After may the heat and humidity goes up, temperature can get uncomfortable, and there are more likely to be rainstorms.
If I remember rightly august til november is hurricane season.
I don't know if this applies to Mexico, but probably its the same.0 -
Try looking on the BBC website at average weather conditions https://www.bbc.co.uk0

They say the best time to visit is between November and April as this is out of hurricane season/rainy season. We have visited the Caribbean in September 2006(Cuba), October 2006 (Mexico), November 2008(Dominican Republic) and April 2007(Cuba), with November 2008 having the worst weather and the most rain. I would say anytime of the year is almost risky with the weather, but the rain normally clears as quickly as it appears.
What is it that you are looking for in the holiday? and what time of year are you looking?0 -
It's only a idea at the moment and looking for prices etc. Time of the year not really important just don't want to be in a hurricane or days of rain (like England).
I'm after a beach and be able to sample/meet, local food/people without going right off the beaten track.
And it wont be till 2010 as this years holidays are all organised.
Thanks again for the replies0 -
Flying time from Gatwick is more like 11 hours on way out and 9 or so on way back!!
In Mexico you tend to stay on the hotel complexes so dont get much chance to meet locals (apart from hotel staff)-in the towns it is also geared up to tourists - although there are some smaller hotels in Playa del Carmen you could look at.
Its not really the same kind of destination as say Barbados/Antigua where you do tend to mix more with local people.
I have no experience of Cuba though so it might be different there.0 -
I would say this time of year. The peak of the hurricane season is generally Sept-Oct, with occasional earlier or later ones. July and august tend to be more rainy: have been in Cuba in August before - it was nice and hot, but a huge downpour every afternoon (usually less than an hour). Then the sun came out again...0
