Cheap shipping to Australia?

We're hoping to move back to Brisbane within a couple of months, and need to ship some personal effects (approx three cubic metres of clothes, toys and mostly books) ... but have been horrified at the prices quoted (cheapest ~£630 seafreight to door)! Although the prices quoted to Brisbane port are cheaper than to an address in Brisbane, once you add the customs charges and transport costs to that, there is so little difference that it's not worth the messing around.

While it's probably unlikely that many on this forum will have had this experience, (though if someone else is heading over soon and wants to share a container, we'd love to hear from you!), we're hoping for some creative moneysaving solutions..... any suggestions??
