    You might be using the trial version of Excel that comes pre-installed on Vista machines. It only lasts for about 3 months. Once the trial period is over you can get into the files but only have limited options.

    Or there could be some VBA routine running via Workbook_Open which is causing the file to hang, try holding down the Shift key when you open the file, or pressing Ctrl + Break when you have it open

    The .xls file might be corrupt, it should repair automatically but that doesn't seem to be happening. There is a manual "Open and Repair" option in Excel 2007, a detailed explanation is at http://grok.lsu.edu/Article.aspx?articleId=3172

    Alternatively try opening Excel .xls file in Google Docs http://docs.google.com - you need a Google account but it's free to sign up.
