The cheapest option (avoiding any policy amendment fees) will be to to start a new policy. But if you do this, then you will have to use your NCD from your previous renewal - assuming no claims since then - (ie no ncd for your current policy could be used when taking out a new policy for your new car).

If you need this years NCD, then you will have to bite the bullet, and inform your insurer of a change of car and pay whatever they ask for the period up to 26/4/09. Expect to pay a premium adjustment if the new car is better than the original and an admin fee.

Your current insurance should still be ok till it expires, unles simply cover have told you differently regarding this.

You may find the car dealer has a deal with an Insurer such as Zurich oor Norwich Union where they provide 7 days free insurance with the car which might help a bit

In your circumstances you want to follow Quentins advice...If you need this years NCD, then you will have to bite the bullet, and inform your insurer of a change of car and pay whatever they ask for the period up to 26/4/09. Expect to pay a premium adjustment if the new car is better than the original and an admin fee.

You really need to get the no claims bonus for completing the year and if you start a new policy before your NU policy starts the new company are unlikely to allow you this years no claims bonus which will make a lot of difference at your age

You can always use the 7 day free cover to start with and then change your policy although the amount it will save you bearing in mind how long is left on your policy will not be that much as most of the difference you will pay is likely to be the administration fee NU charge for swopping the cars (Unless the car is a much higher group and / or much newer)

P.S don't buy GAP cover from the dealer if they try and sell it to you as they will charge you around £300 for it and then add it to the finance so you will pay interest on the £300 as well. You can get gap cover by shopping around on the internet for circa £160 and you can just pay it in one hit

If you go "option one" - start a new policy - then make sure they accept your NCD as it stands on the letter you have, as the renewal date on your proof letter will say 26/4/09, and presumably the "free" 7 days via the garage will expire prior to then.

yeh i think what im going to do is ring my insurance company on my break and see what i'll have to pay if i alter now...and then not bother with the 7day insurance and just renew my policy on the date it runs out with the new company ive found...they virtually halfing the price of what i paid last year on my old car...pretty happy with that....
