Home insurance query

Hi everyone
Home insurance due for renewal but I'm not sure what to do about a refused claim made during current policy?

Made a claim for secondary flooding with Tesco Insurance but they have refused to honour it. It is now being looked at by the ombudsman.

Do I have to declare the claim when I do a search for this years best deal?

Thanks
Pam

Can you give us some more information please.

What caused the flooding was it a river flood, exceptional rain overcoming the drains or a burst pipe.

When you say secondary flooding do you mean you have discovered further damage from the original flooding.

Roughly how much has the claim cost so far

following the floods in 2007, caused by extremely heavy rain fal,l many homes in my area appeared to have escaped any damage.
However, what we did not realise was that the water had seeped under the foundations of the property.
The result of this is damp walls and floors and a really bad smell of stagnent water. This became apparent one year on in 2008.
This is a very unhealthy state of affairs as it is contaminated water that came up from the drains during the floods.
This is classed as secondary flooding by most insurance companies but not by Tesco.

The question asked usually doesn't refer to claims, but something like "have you had any incidents or losses, whether covered by insurance or not in the last x years?", in that case you would need to declare it irrespective of whether or not the claim is honoured.

I agree with Quentin you will have to declare it, in addition there will also be a question that asks has your home ever been flooded which you will have to answer.

You will find it very very difficult to find anyone else to offer cover if you have had a flood claim, people normally remain with the same Insurer.

For you info the Tesco Policy is underwritten by UK Insurance which is part of the same group as Direct Line and Churchill (They are all owned by RBS).
