Really confused about what to declare on insurance policy...Please help

Hi All,
I had home insurance with the post office last year, which included home and contents and home emergency cover.
In March the home emergency cover came in really handy as I had water randomly dripping from the ceiling in my dining room. I called the emergency hotline and arranged a plumber to come out the next day and fix it. This claim is still "on going" as the plumber still has not been paid by them  Though I am expecting a call from them this week to sort it out.
It is now time to renew again, and I don't want to renew with the post office because I think it would be better to get insurance with someone else, along with some nice cash back
My real question is -
Do I need to declare that I have made a claim even though it was NOT with the insurer (as such) it was with the special emergency people.
If I DO need to declare it, does that come under a buildings OR contents claim? I only claimed for the plumber, not the carpets as they needed changing anyway, and they were not that bad.
Ive never claimed on my buildings or contents in 30 years, so it would be a shame to loose that little bonus.
Please give me a hand, I don't want to pay for insurance and then find out its null and void if I do need to claim.
Many thanks everyone,
Nathan

im sure if the claim hasnt been finalised then it wouldnt be classed as a claim as it could go either way.
as your looking for insurance check out morethan you get 75k of contents insurance free and you can get 70 quid from quidco0 -
If you used the insurers 'emergency' line to get your plumber then you have made a claim, also if you are expecting insurers to pay out how is that not a claim.

You even have to declare claims that were refused.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. As already posted, you do need to declare this incident, irrespective of the outcome of your claim, or even if at the end of it all, you pay for the repairs yourself.
As far as which policy it "goes against", you need to just answer the question truthfully (if it's asked - some companies just ask you to declare something like "I have not had more than two incidents in the last 3 years").
If asked it is usually along the lines of "Have you experienced any incident of loss or damage, whether covered by insurance or not in the last x years?", in that case you would need to declare it when applying for home insurance.0 -
Ok, that sounds about right, thank you.
Any idea if this would be a buildings or contents claim though? I only ask, because on the application page, they ask -
How many buildings claims have you made in the last 5 years
How many contents claims have you made in the last 4 years
A burst pipe would be "contents" right?0 -
If you claimed off your insurance for damage done to items by the leak, then its a contents claim.
If you claimed for the repair to the ceiling as a result of the leak, then its a buildings claim.0 -
Best to be honest. Are you trying to do it online to claim cashback? What I usually do in these circumstances is ring and ask but without giving any of my contact details so I'm still eligible for the cashback
