Gestational Diabetes

Hi folks,

Daughter is already having a rough time in pregnancy and has now been diagnosed with gestational diabetes....................has anyone any experience of going through this ,all advice ,tips and particularly experiences appreciated.

I can find stuff about it on the web but mostly worst case scenarios :-/..................would like some personal thoughts /experiences if possible .

Thanks for any help :)

Not had it but know someone who has. Only really know that it can result in bigger baby (and sometimes more complications - sorry), and it may just be gestational but occasionally can turn into diabetes after pregnancy too.

She should get more appointments at the hospital with consultant and usually diabetic nurse/consultant as well - they will want to keep a close eye on her to keep her as fit and healthy as poss!

My mum was diagnosed with diabetes about a year ago. Obviously she's not pregnant ;D but would have thought controlling the blood sugar is the same, she says simple carbohydrates help keep the level level, eg. rice, pasta, unsweetened cereal, jacket spuds.

My wife was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes for both of her pregnancies and in both cases we had a beautiful healthy normal child. Our Son was quite heavy at 11 pounds but our daughter was a fairly average 7 pounds. In both cases she was put on a fairly strict low sugar / salt diet . She did a self blood test daily to monitor blood sugar levels which involved a pin !!!!!! and a machine to measure blood sugar levels.

After both births she returned to a normal diet.

My sister-in-law had this. She did have extra checks through her pregnancy as a precaution but she had a healthy, average weight baby and has had no problems since.

Thanks guys ,so it seems the worst case scenario is just that and I will quit overly worrying as only mothers (well me) do ;)
  • Hello,

I had gestational diabetes which was not diagnosed until my daughter was born even though i showed some symptoms she was a big baby also she had low blood sugars when she was born and was in intesive care for 3 days. But she is a happy two year old toddler and breastfeeding helped the bonding but I suggest that your daughter asks her gp for compression stockings which help with the swelling of legs and ankles hope this ingo helps.
  • I too had gestational diabetes along with high blood pressure. Had to test my blood daily, watch what I ate and drank. I wasn't put on a special diet just had to visit the diabetes clinic weekly for urine testing and to check on baby. I used to pick up a bar of chocolate and can of coke on the way home as I knew I had a week before I worried about it again ::)

Due to both the diabetes and high blood pressure I opted for an epidural as there was a pretty good chance of a caeserean and I didn't want to be put under, however, in the end although I had to go down to theatre baby was born without a section.

Baby was taken straight to the nursery for her blood to be checked and mine was checked that night and the next morning. Apparently there is more chance of me getting diabetes at a later stage. She was 7lb 4oz and very healthy.

She can't have an epidural so will need to be put out if it comes to that ,thank you all for your input ,it's very much appreciated especially from those who have experienced it :)
