    Uninstall everything you dont want

What happens when you attempt to save to cdrive? (what 'pops up' or whatever)

Press control, alt and delete to bring up task manger. is there anything running thats using a lot of cpu?

    IF you can ~

Download CCLEANER (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION' ~ make sure YAHOO TOOLBAR is unticked on installation)
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

if it was a company laptop, it may be best to wipe it and reinstall windows as there may still be domain policies left on it (like not letting you install/uninstall software etc)

Agreed. Wipe it. Re-install XP. Update drivers.

TICK these in hijack then FIX them ~

and THIS if you dont use the proxy (I assume you dont)-
    O23 - Service: Proxy Host Service (ProxyHostService) - Funk Software, Inc. - c:\Program Files\Funk Software\Host\ph32svc.exe

As you downloaded hijack you must then be able to download other programs?

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')

    UPDATE and FULL SCAN

Best run another hijack log to make sure the old anti virus has completely gone too
