Calling Roaming UK Mobile from Landline

Hi
A friend is currently in Portugal and I'm wondering how much it costs to call her mobile.
She's on Orange with a monthly contract. I learnt from a trusted reviews.com (cannot link!) article that it will cost her 19p/minute to recieve a call. My landline is on the Bt evening and weekend plan and my mobile is on the Virgin Daily Bonus tariff(PAYG).

Does anyone have any idea of the rates for these calls? Would it be cheaper to call her from the landline or from my mobile? Is it like texts where its the same price to contact a roaming mobile as it is one in the UK?

Thanks very much in advance!
Phil

Have a look at the International Call Checker on the right hand side of the moneysavingexpert page, under free tools. The cheapest I can see is 7p per minute using your landline but dialing an access code first. It will still cost your friend though. Try the link below. Using your mobile will be very expensive especially as you are on a different network.

Texts are a better option usually only slightly more expensive than the UK and I did not get charged when I was in Portugal for receeiving them.

Secret Lady is a little confused.

Your friend is roaming with a UK mobile in Portugal. It will, therefore, cost you exactly the same to call her as it would if she was still in the UK.

However, as you say, it will ALSO cost her to receive your call. I don't know whether the 19p/minute you quote is correct or not but, as Portugal is an EU country, it sounds about right.

I use 18185 to call mobiles from my landline but the MSE UK CallChecker has details of a number of gateway providers offering similar cheap rates.

See HERE for weekend options for calling UK mobiles from your BT landline and HERE for weekday options.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Phew! Thanks to all of you. I freaked out a little when I saw the 50p/min BT charges for calls to portugal. I think I'll set up an account with 18185 then.

These have been amazingly fast replies! Thanks very much - I crawled the web a bit before posting to try and find some kind of rates chart but without any luck. You guys have been excellent! Thanks soo much!:j

Also note that from July 1st (*) these rates should come down marginally...there'll be a regulatory price cap of Euro0.19/min on roaming charges for inbound calls.

(*) Subject to ratification by the European Parliament in early May, plus subject to currency fluctuations meaning that £0.19>Euro0.19 is still the case, plus subject to whether Heinz's figures include VAT...the price cap is Euro0.19+VAT. Rates will fall to Euro0.15 in 2010, Euro0.11 in 2011.
