Well there is a minimum rental period of six months, but that is up this month.

I signed a 'Short Assured Tennancy' but I also signed an agency document which definitely states that I must tell them whether or not I want to stay by the end of month four. Then I can either stay on month by month (albeit still on 2 months notice) or sign a new 6 month lease. Yes the landlord has to give me 2 months. My short assured tennancy was sined on 17th Oct 2009.

By the way, I am in Scotland so maybe things are different here, but I hope not.

Regarding council tax- well I had to pay on both flats last time I moved beause they were furnished, albeit poorly. I was rather annoyed but couldn't convince tha council otherwise and didn't want to lie.

    Thanks.

Paragon - am assuming you signed in Oct *2008*;)

Yes being in Scotland does make a difference , because of the doctrine of Tacit Relocation. Unless the wording of your Tenancy Agreement specifically says that TR will not apply, if you do not give appropriate notice before the end of your FT then the contract may renew itself automatically for another FT of the same length or for one year (whichever is shorter).

AFIAA in Scotland the tenancy agreement can provide for longer periods of notice within the FT than the legal minimum.

Scottish tenants should check with their local council's private sector rentals officer or with a LL& T worker at a law centre or CAS if they are not clear about notice periods.
