Norwich Union free contents insurance to "new customers"

Hi

Apologies if this question has been posted before.

My current buildings and contents insurance with Norwich Union has not yet expired, but is due to do so shortly. NU are currently advertising free contents insurance to new customers only.

We have often been told that it’s ok and sometimes cheaper to apply as a new customer rather than renew.

My question is, can I apply as a new customer to claim the free contents insurance? If so, would I be able to legitimately claim on the contents insurance as a new customer if something happened, or would I still be regarded as an existing customer and so have a null and void policy?

I'm not sure, your not missing out on much as the "Free Contents" they give to new customers is just a basic policy with none of the extras on such as Accidental Damage and Personal Effects etc. Its probably worth about £50 saving.

Why don't you try and get a quote from the NU direct website and then ring them up and say you can get it cheaper from there and ask if there is anything they can do

Thanks dacouch. I wasn't aware of what this insurance offered. If what you're saying is true then it's really not worth it. And I guess you can't fill it out with things like Accidential Damage or Personal Effects cover either or if I can, knowing these companies it may cost me more than I normally pay. I've been with them for some years so I think I'll take your advice and give them a call. Thanks again

Most of the Insurers that offer "Free Contents" do the same, its clever marketing as everyone assumes you get the full works. In reality you will have to pay extra to get all the bells and whistles.

It won't do you any harm to shop around and even go on the NU website and get a quote as a new customer and then ring NU up and say I can get it cheaper but want to stay with you. Most companies will either match the quote or give you a hefty discount to keep you.

When you get quotes be carefull as a lot of the sites default to a basic policy so you have to go back in to add the extras and also quote you with biggish voluntary excesses which will normally be on top of any compulsory excess (An excess that is buiilt into the policy). You can normally find out what the total excess is by clicking on the excesses tab on the quote

If they don't post up here what other companies have quoted you and we can tell you if they are ok or not.
