Difficulties uploading my website..

Hi All!

OK, I've really done something stupid - like I've forgotten how to actually upload my site - it's a couple years since I did one & brain has got older!

It's a new site, registered domain/hosting in easyspace, it's 'active', so not at fault there.

Using paid for ipswitch ftp service, which is where I was previously.

Made the site in NVU (all free, but worked fine previously)

But once I've gone through the ipswitch procedure with easyspace info/passwords, I'm stuck!!

The files transfer & show as being in 'remote' setting, but nothing displays online, other than error 404.

& checking the 'help' in ipswitch has made my brain almost explode!

So if a more cleverer than me, Moneysaver, can explain what to do in the SIMPLEST form, I'd be most grateful!!

Thanks in advance!!

VB

i think it varies between the software you use to upload the site and the website host.

just as an example: in windows, you right click on a folder > properties > security tab (with simple file sharing turned off) and configure the permissions there.

a 404 error usually means that you are trying to access a file thats not there (ie. and incorrectly typed page name), so check that you have uploaded them to the right directory (folder).

Still no luck - not sure how to check the folders as you mention.

I'm in 'being thick mode' today!

  • A 404 error means the page you are looking for doesn't exist, so you have either uploaded it to the wrong folder or have named the file incorrectly.

Check it is in the right folder (possibly called httpdocs or htdocs)
