Joint Account - no minimum input

Me and my b/f are looking at a joint account mainly for family/friends birthday/christmas presents and holiday as it just makes things a lot easier.
we went to nationwide (prior to their currency charge change thing) as you don't have to put a salary in each month. We are currently living apart and so this is the best and we will essentially 'load' the card before christmas/when we're going on holiday etc.
Nationwide would only give us a solo card - him not me and he's looking into it.
In the meantime does anyone know if we could get a card from elsewhere and not put a salary/monthly amount in.
HSBC would be ideal as he's with them so less hassle. Want to avoid natwest as neither of us like them.
TIA

Doesn't Nationwide issue Visa debits rather than Maestro/Solo?BR 08/04/09 | ED 02/10/09

I made it through!
Don't ignore a problem. Unlike a bad smell, it won't eventually go away.0 -
most of them want you to put a salary in to it though or a minimum amount each month and we don't want to do that.0

I thought about typing 'basic' accounts but thought that might scare the OP. From the requirements though a basic account is all they need....unless you are including 'basic bank accounts' HSBC don't encourage current a/cs unless your salary or £500 min is paid in.Kavanne

A solo or visa electron will still be very widely accepted in shops for them. When I had a solo and electron and a retailer didn't take it, I just searched online for one that sold that product that did..... But I suppose some people won't be happy with that.Probably not if they want a proper debit card..
Halifax gave me visa debit and no requirement to pay in a salary. You do get £5 IF you pay in £1000 a month, but there's no penalty if you don't.
rbs/natwest also don't require it.Kavanne

We use a Halifax bank account for exactly that purpose, no salary paid into it.0

6 months ago I worked for a major supermarket as a Garage Manager. When had our pumps changed over to chip and pin we were told they no longer accepted Solo or Electron becuse the banks claimed such cards were more prone to misuse and as such limited the type of places where customers could use them. Not helpful when trying to explain to someone why you could not accept their card. The only thing worse was the 'magic penny'0
