Ah I wondered if you were going to make your usual worthwhile observation.

The Police are professionals and on the whole (Not always) use their judgement and experience when deciding whether a ticket or just a talking to is the right course of action.0

If he was wearing a suit and driving a big posh car he would of got off with just a road side warning.

People with the money best left alone as they might fight the case and cost them some money.0 -
Just think of it another way, yes he got 3 points, but he went through a light which meant stop. He could easily of caused an accident on his first time out.0

To be honest I think the OP son was dealt with harshly. I have heard of similar things happening when the light was on Amber. In fact I was in the car with my dad when the same thing happened to him (the light was on Amber) but on that occasion he got away with a telling off.
As already suggested, if it was a traffic car I would ask to see the video evidence. If this is not possible he might just have to take it on the chin, I think the chances of a successful appeal are slim.
It might just be worth posting on the peepipoo sight to se if they can offer any better advice.0 -

I think that a fine and a warning (to stay on the police system) would have been an apt punishment bearing in mind it was 1st time out driving on his own. Maybe I'm biased but I do think it was a bit harsh giving him 3 points.
Thanks for any advice.
If your son's car had been hit into the side of because a young driver went through a red light would you see a fine and warning as an apt punishment then?
If your son ran a red light then he has to be willing to take the punishemnt. Being a new driver is no excuse, If he's not ready to go on the raod on his own then maybe he should have someone sat next to him for a few more days?
I am a young male driver that drives a powerful car. I get pulled over by the police a lot. They do give youngsters a hard time but they don't just hand out points for the sake of it. I have had some right !!! hole police pull me over and they may have a go at you for petty things but they will only give you points if they are sure you have broken a rule of the raod. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
amber means stop,,so he went through a light tht meant stop ,,if we all did this the road, would b chaos(or even more chaos) take it on the chin0

For once linasPilibaitisisbatman I agree with you :rotfl:
Personally I think getting the ticket from the police could benefit his driving in the long run as hopefully it will make him a more cautious driver and aware of the implications of his actions. If they had let him off he may have become complacent.
The Police are professionals and on the whole (Not always) use their judgement and experience when deciding whether a ticket or just a talking to is the right course of action.
Anyway congratulations to your son on passing and hopefully this lesson will have a good effect on his long term driving habits
I completely agree. I had only been driving a few weeks when I bumped the car in front. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depends how you look at it) there was a police car behind me and they pulled us both over. The policeman gave me a very stern talking to about driving without due care and attention and I have never, ever forgotten what he said. They took no action as there was no damage, the other driver was satisfied he didn't want to take it further and I was crying, a lot! I was mortified and so upset and ashamed of myself.
Now I'm very aware of my stopping distance and am a lot more careful approaching roundabouts (that's where it happened). I'd also be completely respectful of any policeman's decision.0
