I would guess this would still mean that E.ON accumulate a substantial amount of cash by forcing every DD to go through the same averaging process where the weighting is more towards E.ON than the customer - doesnt sound like a good deal to me !
Hey OldFella, yes you are right, it is a bad deal now - it never used to be though, I have no problem with E.ON in general only this specific point where by they have bumped my monthly DD charge by 50%, looks like this is going to have to be escalated to their complaints dept.

As stated in my post I am using a lot less energy this year than I did last year therefore my DD should not increasey fluctuate a few pounds or so - not + 50%, this is wrong.

ok I have a £56 debit on my account

I would have thought that eon would see that debit on your account and automatically think your DD should go up. I would work out annual use in kwh for each fuel and cost it at current prices, dividing by twelve to get a monthly amount. Pay the £56 and argue the case for the DD to be set as you calculate - I've done this in the past and found a supplier will capitulate when you have evidence behind you.

Our use has dropped but our DD should stay the same because prices are higher than when we started paying this amount (over eighteen months ago), but we have just put in readings and have a small credit balance on both accounts so haven't been hit with any increase.
  • I was paying £75 a month with NPower last year - did the comparison sites and was directed to switch to EON, capped rates, with a nice cashback. This year (6 months after being with EON) they have written to me and told me I am £450 in debit, and they are increasing my DD to £128 a month!! How does this work? I'm not regimented enough to have monitored elec/gas usage year by year, however, I know that I suddenly don't have a heated swimming pool, nor do I suddenly heat another 10 rooms! I spoke to them, and they said that all energy suppliers prices have increased by 40%, even though they have capped their prices - obviously after the 40% hike! Not exactly explained on the price comparison site, that read like they were capping their prices based on my previous payments to NPower. Not happy.

That would be very unusual. Capped and fixed prices are often starting off higher than other tariffs - you pay a bit more for the security of the cap/fix. Did you check the kwh cost of the tariff against your old npower tariff? If not, it could be that you were paying more for one fuel than the other. Most people have used more fuel this winter because it's been so cold. Meter reading's the way to go.
  • The comparison site didn't say it would save me money, but it didn't say it would cost me more - came out the same, but offering capped rates. I assumed the rates were capped at that point - not after hoiking up the price per kwh 40%. Unfortunately, I didn't check the kwh tarriff against my old one - just trusted the info on the comparison site. Just think it was slightly misleading if I am now paying £50 odd a month more. May have used slightly more fuel with the cold winter, but not huge amounts! Used my airer and open fire too! Thanks for your reply Magentasue. :-)

Oldfella and others - this is a near universal alteration by all suppliers, not just Eon.

Unless the discounts are stopped, it is only fair that direct debit customers should continually be in credit.

maybe someone could explain this - the energy suppliers very kindly give us a few pounds discount, then they expect everyone to lend them a few hundred pound every year ?

    is that their logic ?

But you don't have to pay by fixed monthly payments - you can pay quarterly in arrears and, perhaps, get a prompt payment discount. For those of us who would rather have a fixed payment and monitor our use, it works very well. Personally, I'd rather be in credit and receive the discount, than debt with the energy companies.

If you were on a capped rate, unit prices wouldn't have increased.

So any shortfall must be due to the fact that your consumption increased.
(Not surprising considering the very cold winter we experienced)
