You were unlucky who you spoke to. Normally, a lot of providers do send a dummy transaction through accounts. Some other banks will show that a DD has been set up online. Unfortunately natwest don't however they could have checked that the DD was set up if they had been very thorough. I suspect they were looking to merely answer the question "is there any direct debits going out this week" rather than are there any direct debits set up on my account and not claimed on yet.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

So would you not agree that Natwest are atleast partly in the wrong? And yes, that is how i put the question to them as opposed to asking them if there were any D/D's on the account that had not yet been claimed!!

They answered the question they were asked so technically no they weren't wrong because they would have been unaware of the date it was going out rather than if it had been set up.It's a pity they didn't think outside the box and look.
