M&S currency rip off

I have had an experience with M&S foreign exchange rates I'd like your reaction to.
I was watching the U$/£ rate as I needed U$ currency. On Monday 23 March the M&S website stated that the rate was U$1.40 to £1. I checked again on Tuesday morning and as it was still the same rate I decided to go to my local M&S to buy my currency. The rate I was given was U$1.38 and when I queried this I was told that that very week policy had changed so that the web quoted rate would be available only in specific stores according to local competition situations. This was not stated on the website, and had I known this I would have chosen to buy my currency at the web stated rate from a different organisation. Indeed, the M&S employee said that she was sure that this policy change would result in many queries. I think that this practice is wrong, dishonest and possibly illegal?

It clearly states on the M&S website that "Rates may vary in Bureaux de Change from those quoted online". This is written directly underneath the quoted rate, it's not even hidden away in the small print.
Was the rate you were offered in the store the one shown on the big board they have? If so I hardly think it can be considered a rip-off. You went into the shop, they offered you an exchange rate. If you didn't like it, you were quite entitled to walk away. There's nothing illegal about that.0 -
Hi,
I don't understand why you think this is wrong - you were offered a rate, you accepted, what is the issue ....
If you look under the transport link on here, there is link that will allow you to put in amount wanted & it will tell where you can get best rate.

As rates are changing throughout the day then in all fairness to M&S the rate could have dropped in the time it took you to get too the store.0
