Cancelling contract with BT

I have been a BT broadband customer for a few years now. I received a letter through the post yesterday from BT giving us an 'amazing offer' if I signed up to another 12 month contract. Sadly I never actually saw this letter and my other half decided to accept the offer through a weblink.
Now, I was actually planning on moving away from BT soon as I can get a cheaper and better offer elsewhere, plus some of BT's recent business practices have put me off of being involved with them in any way.
I understand that under contract law I can cancel a contract within 14 days without penalty, or even under the distance selling regulations as it was an internet order. Do these same rules apply to a contract renewal or just new contracts?
Ideally I'd like to switch back to my previous deal and then just cancel it in a month once my new broadband has been activated, is this possible? If not I'll just cancel it.
Thanks for your help.
