Flight / Travel Insurance Help

We'v just booked flights with Ryanair which have cost s about £250 for a family, however to save me some money I've used my electron card to pay. Just thinking now after seeing the collapse of a few airlines last year, I wont actually be insured using this method of payment unike if I had used a credit card!.

Anyone know if you can get any sort of insurance against being left stranded at anairport or not even getting there to begin with? I'm currently looking around for my travel insurancebut havent come across ths yet, plenty offerring redundancy insurance.

Cheers

Scheduled airline failure is now a common optional extra for most travel policies you will find OR may be included as standard. This sounds like the kind of cover you might need? I am surprised to hear you have not seen it if you have been looking around. You can also get stand alone policies

Google "scheduled airline failure insurance" and you will find a number of companies offering this cover including the AA, Amex, SwiftCover etc etc...

To elaborate to give you an idea of the cover I mean so you can see if it is what you want, a sample wording from a company I have no association with, covers the following:
The Insurer will pay up to £1,500 in total for each Insured-Person named on the Invoice and Airline Ticket for:
    1) Irrecoverable sums paid in advance in the event of insolvency of the travel or Accommodation provider not forming part of an inclusive holiday prior to departure
    or
    2) In the event of insolvency after departure:
    A) additional pro rata costs incurred by the Insured-Person(s) in replacing that part of the travel arrangements to a similar standard to
    that originally booked
    or
    B) if curtailment of the holiday is unavoidable - the cost of return transportation to the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and
Ireland to a similar standard to that originally booked.

Amex offer an option that sounds similar:
    Stranded Traveller Assistance

This Option will provide assistance if you are unable to return home as a result of your transport operator ceasing to trade. You will be covered for the cost of alternative travel home and emergency expenses for food and accommodation until you depart to return home. Cover also includes travel and accommodation costs for you to collect and bring home your children, should they become stranded due to a transport provider ceasing to trade. This Option is available on all policies.

Yes Dogbot that's what i'm loking for. We always book DIY otherwise we wouldnt be able to afford to go abroad any other way. I felt so sorry for those people at airports last year that couldnt get home. I know I wouldnt have the funds to get us back, i couldnt imagine being in that situation.

I know that people say that Ryaniar wont go bust, but as far as I'm concerned anything could happen these days!

Thank ever so much for your help :T

No probs, have a good shop around as I am sure when I bought my annual travel about a month ago I got loads of the companies that came up on money supermarket offering it as an option once you got away from ms website.

I agree, we always shop around and book DIY for the same reason, though as it is just the misses and I we are ok re getting home from europe etc. If I were going further abroad and wasn't booking with BA or similar would definatly take out the cover.

Should also point out i have nothing to do with amex either having re-read my first post! Just seemed a good example of someone calling the cover something else.

You do realise that BA are more likely to go bust than Ryanair? Several airlines that use the former's business model have already gone under (or required state intervention).
    Gone ... or have I?
  • On the latest piece of advertising e-mail from Ryanair, it says ...
"from April 2nd Ryanair passengers must select travel insurance to purchase"

Is this legal? Or should we just regard it as their latest scam to boost the real price of a cheap headline flight cost?

No airlines fares include travel insurance.

Prior to this change, you had to opt out of their optional insurance, this change means you have to opt in. Most would see that as an improvement, not accuse them of a scam!

I agree with Quentin, you now have to opt into their travel insurance. Their cover is not that great. In addition in my opinion people are less likely to declare existing medical conditions on an opt out travel policy.

As with most policies you take out with an Airline or Travel Provider the Legal Expenses section does not cover suing Ryan Air...
