Typical gas usage
In a bid to try and reduce my energy costs, given up on switching as once you do it once or twice you seem to be down to +- tens of pounds as the big suppliers all follow each other in pricing (even if the regulator thinks otherwise!). So as far as I can see the only way to control costs is to reduce/maximise usage, I can only see energy prices increase in the future so acting now might help. Doing the usual stuff on electric, no more standby/off unless required etc..the typical electric usage matches several online estimates for typical(average) of about 4K kwh, but my gas usage is way over the average/typical for a small house, about 28K kwh. All the online info I can get is that I should be using about 16-19K kwh for my needs/size of house (heat & cooking). Does anybody have a true picture of gas usage online data and what areas I should be looking to help reduce gas usage? Thanks..

Well the average gas consumption in UK is 20,500kWh pa(56kWh a day)
So if you are using 50% of that you are doing very well and IMO certainly not "way over the average/typical" as you state; especially as you cook with gas. You would be classed as a 'low user'.
A lower room temp and more insulation would be the main way to reduce consumption.
Average Electricity consumption in UK is 3,300kWh(9kWh per day) so again at 4kWh you are well under half the UK average. - and that does not really depend on the size of your house.0 -
Thanks, maybe I was not clear,
Gas Yearly use 28,000 kwh (UK average = 19,000 kwh)
Electric yearly use 4,000 kwh (about Uk average)
So I estimate I am using about 9,000kwh more gas than I should be based on house size, say about 200-300 pounds per year!
I am investigating improved insulation etc.. which might make some of this up but wondering if older boilers (7 year combi)/thermostats might be to blame?0
