Best free CMS?

I run a website for a charity. I would like to move away from the current single author approach to a community model by installing a (free) CMS, which would allow me to give editing rights to other members of the charity to modify content on specific pages.

Any recommendations from members of this forum would be welcome. I am in the progress of updating our hosting package to include MySQL, which will increase the range of CMS that I can use.

TIA

BikerEd

I recommend wordpress you can give others varying author access, it updates itself at the click of a button and you can easily install mods and themes, such as a voting plugin, integrated ads, seo improvement mods etc etc

Can't post the link because I'm new, sorry, the .org is the one you want though.

Wordpress is unrivalled in terms of blogging. And it's so easy to use, I know some people use it for creating a simple website.

But for something a bit more sophisticated it does have limitations, and it's best to go with a more powerful CMS.

Thanks. I'll take a look at both Drupal and Joomla. Wordpress is definitely out, although blogging by the charity's members is something we may consider adding.

Although wordpress has its roots in blogging, it is very extendible and makes for a very good CMS. I have a number of sites where wordpress is the CMS. For a smaller site that doesn't need the full blown features of a CMS it is definitely worth a look.

Is it just me or is the joomla download site broken? I get a 404 when I try to download anything.

If you have an exisiting site, then you can use cushycms to add editable regions to your site. (take a look at cushycms.com) but if you're going for a new site with inbuilt cms, wordpress seems the way foward.
