BT overcharged and then threatened me with debt collector

BT were charging me for a phone call package they knew I didnt have as I was with sky and had telephoned them a year earlier to inform them of this. When it came to light I asked BT to refund me the extra money that had been paid by direct debit and was told I should have queried my bill earlier, they had took an extra £77 from me that year. They said that my telephone call to them a year earlier was not recorded and when I asked for itemised bill to prove I had called them I was told this would not show up on bill as it was a freephone number. I was just told outright there was no way they would refund my money. I then transferred my line to sky and again telephoned BT. To my shock 2 months later they sent me a bill again, when I telephoned them they said that they had been charging me still but they would take it off as there was a record of my call. Another bill came through my door and after a few telephone calls of getting nowhere, I was threatened with a debt collector. So I eventually paid AGAIN for a service I never had.

Im not clear 100% with what you had with what company so i will give you an example that may help.

When you move your calling plan (not the line just the calls) then it is up to you to cancel any calling plans you have with BT. If you dont the you will get charged and charges will be maintained as you have not cancelled the plan.

After you move the line rental there are some items that are not taken over by you new provider so they stay on a live BT account and the account stays open and so does the direct debit (usually the fixed monthly payment plan where you pay a set amount each month.

The amount you owe may be a debit amount owed from months of under payment on a plan thats brought forward.Have you had a bill that says "FINAL BILL"

This looks like a very positive and helpful initiative from BT:) A BT support staff member monitoring these threads, well done.
