Flights pricing disparity

Hi. I am looking for a one-way ticket to Houston, Texas for the middle of June. BA charge over £700, but with Continental you can get a return for around $480! Continental also charge much more for a single than a return. Why this inconsistency? Obviously it makes sense to buy a return ticket than a single? Can you be penalised for not using your return ticket?

MARTINPROLL - No when I arrived here in the US it was on a 2-week package holiday ticket - I just never went back - what are they going to do send a search party all over the US for you. And don't wory about the INS/Homeland Security (as long as you are comming to the US legally that is) after you get off plane and get to passport control you just say you are arriving on an immigration visa and they will take you into a room and check your visa etc. They dont care that you are not using the return ticket.

No, not a disparity. The airlines understand that spending a lifetime in Houston is a privilege worth far more than going there for a few measly days. Sadly, if you were later to go and live in Mexico you would not get a refund from them (although you could always ask).

I was told by a travel agent that one way tickets are more expensive because the airlines put most of the taxes and additional charges onto the outward part of your journey for some strange reason.

a freind of ours missed his return flight from Morocco to the UK on a business trip, it was cheaper for him to buy a return than to get a single even if he didnt use the return part. Just a part of the airline business

There is no problem with not using your return and you can get return tickets from gatwick for £264 from netflights. Loads cheaper than £700 depends where you want to fly from.
