Motorway sign

Wondered if someone could help...

Driving on the M6 motorway today and I noticed a sign that I wasnt sure what it meant...

Was a blue sign, quite small, on hard shoulder with some letters and numbers, one read something like:

M6
A
378.3

and there were others saying different numbers (but all with M6 at the top)


Does anyone know what they mean?

These are crucial for the emergency services.....If you ever need the emergency services when you are on any motorway, dial 999 and please, please, please quote the reference on one of those boards....It saves crucial time as they will know exactly where you are!!!!!!

thanks for that, I wondered if they were something to do with that but wanted to be certain:D

There's a similar sort of thing where I live. The parking/lay-bys on the A9 (from Perth to Inverness & up to the North coast of Scotland) are usually numbered. So if you need the emergency services, you can say if you're going north or south & the number & they'll know where you'll be. Even though I have seen some off them without the numbered signs

Why are the distances in Kilometers? We use Miles in this country.

The same reason we buy fuel in litrers and measure the consumption in gallons lol.

there are other similar little posts, when i break down in my VW (often)i get to quote them, its so they can work out which side you are on and where abouts

Also probably used for directing workers to repairs etc
