Help please - train from Birmingham to Liverpool

Hello
I live in Somerset and need some help in obtaining the best deal for travel from Birmingham to Liverpool - departing on 26 May and returning 27 May.
I have just looked at National Express where the journey times are a lot longer than when I have used them before and the train fare is a lot more expensive.
As I am unsure of the various train operators between the 2 cities I would be grateful if someone could suggest a split journey.
I do not need to travel at peak times. Mid to late morning departure is OK from Birmingham and early afternoon departure for my return is ideal.
I look forward to receiving any suggestions and thank you for sparing the time to help me.

The journey times are lengthened because Stafford - Crewe is served by buses - also accounts for the lack of cheap tickets.

Try London Midland - they operate the route. Virgin don't
  • Wait for advance purchase tickets to be released for sale.

London Midland operates the route BHM-LIV. Advance fares are usually very reasonable, but if there's engineering work they may not be available that day. The normal return fares are not bad, but if the route is disrupted it can be worth getting tickets Birmingham-Chester (route via Shrewsbury and Wrexham) and then a local train CTR-LIV, buying separate tickets if it's cheaper.
