Looking for help, windows updates makes computer stop working

Hi,

I'm posting this on behalf of my dad. He bought a new computer with windows vista installed on it. Sometimes when windows is downloading updates the computer stops responding and appears to freeze (even though task manager shows things still running) the other time it seemed to go through fine but the computer wouldn't work properly so we system restored it back a few days for it to work ok again.

One time when the computer got restarted after it downloaded the update it showed a 'windows is configuring updates' page and it didn't do anything. It said it was configuring update 1 of 3 and it stayed on that screen for 4 hours before my dad got the hump and pulled the plug.

Also, on the task manager it has a couple of processes which dont have descriptions and wont allow to be ended, one of them being csrss.exe

My apologies if i am not making much sense but vista confuses me majorly as i am an xp girl.

Thanks for any help. Carrie.

    Hi there,

csrss.exe provides the critical functions of the operating system, If you end the task it can cause the blue screen to appear - However if there are multiple tasks running with the same name which are not located in c:\windows\system32 then it can be trojan/spyware/malware

Maybe worth backing out the updates through ControlPanel\WindowsUpdates and then installing one by one to see where the problem lies.

    :)
