Cant change my desktop background??

I cant change my desktop background.
A few months ago, i had a warning of a spyware infection which i got rid of, but i have been left with a blue screen with a black box on my desktop saying,
"SPYWARE INFECTION
Your system is infected with spyware. Windows recommend that you use a spyware removal tool to prevent loss of imporant data and increase system performance.Using this pc before having it cleaned from spyware threats is highly discouraged."
I have tried to change the background theme through the control panel and its not letting me click anytheme??
I have done scans to make sure the threat has gone and i continue to every day.
Does anybody have a clue about what to do?

Go here: download this registry fix from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg
Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.
After the merged successfully prompt,Reboot your computer.

Ageed what Browntoa said BUT, be warned, the infection you have has been mutating over recent weeks. If the fix doesn't work let us know. We'll have to resort to other things.0

sorry....
I click the link and then saved it to my desktop then i double click and it said,"are you sure you want to add the information to the registry" i clicked yes then that was it.....there was no mention of a merge??Abbey Loan £6,000

it's done it, you need to restart your computer to implement the change

You had one or more varients of the "smitfraud" infection. It goes by many other names too. The link below gives a little more detail but you can put "what is smitfraud?" into Goole and you will get plenty of other information..........

I also have a problem with my desktop background. I had a spyware/virus problem ages ago and it has been like this since then:
the active desktop failed white screen with writing is always there. when i right click with the mouse it does not bring up the usual options ie new folder opstions etc but another menu with other stuff. even when i try to change the background through control panel it doesnt work.
any ideas?0 -
