British gas homecare.

Just a quick question for you lot first incase i make a tit of myself on the phone. about a year ago i had to phone around for someone to come look at my boiler cos it was acting up but i had no cover, so i took out the british gas home care cover and the guy on the phoned said that because i was phoning for an emergency call out my cover would be double the normal price, to cover parts e.c.t (we pay £40 a month for it) so i said fine, the guy came out the next day and did absalutly nothing, gave it a wee twiddle and it started working (but the problem is, he never actually fixed it, it was still turning itself off, not going on at all e.c.t) but i just left it.

If i phone them up and tell them im paying double the price and its been a year now, is it likely they will put my price down to the normal level or am i stuck with paying the £40 even though it was never actually fixed?

sorry, not a quick question after all! I'm asking here first cos, im not very confident over the phone and i tend to just go along with whatever im told.

cheers in advance!

You are paying £500 per year for a service contract for your gas boiler? Talk about a licence to print money! You can employ a live-in janitor for less than that!

Child, go to a local college and get some assertiveness training. That is crazy.

Thats not a very helpful comment.

It sounds like the cost of the one-off repair has been added to you're Homecare agreement and it means that for the 1st year the payments are increased. You would have had the option to only pay a one-off fee for the boiler being repaired but it sounds as though you've been talked into taking a Homecare agreement aswell. The payments should automatically decrease, however, it wont do any harm in phoning them just to remind them and at the same time also remind them that the fault is still there and that you want someone out to sort it! Granted £500 for a service contract on its own is excessive, however, you have bundled the cost of the service contract with a call-out for repair.

PS I'm not a huge fan of British Gas Homecare - generally the "service" is very poor, however I think the fact that they will repair a faulty boiler for a one-off charge is quite a good offer.....thats if they repair the boiler that is!

I think i'm £33 a month with BG, and that covers my boiler, heating, fridge/freezer, washer and dryer.

I know it's expensive (but not as much as you're paying!) but my dryer wouldn't repair and I got £150 towards a new one from them.

my elderly father in law was paying around £500 per year,
so i gave them a ring and changed it down to around £300 per year,

its worth just telling them exactly what you want and get the best deal
my FIL had never had them out to service anything nor for any breakdowns, thank god he is finally letting me help out with his finances

Isn't an annual service included? They always service my boiler every year. It's included in your monthly payments.

You should get a renewal notice towards the end of the contract, if you don't want to continue you will need to ring up to cancel otherwise it continues automatically.

They offer lots of different options so if you do want cover check out their website for details.
