i have downloaded a movie off the net in .AVI format (it is not pirate before anyone starts) and i am trying to burn it to dvd so i can play it in my dvd player. My nero is ****ed so i am using a program called NTI cd/dvd maker. i click create dvd video disk and drop the fril in the VIDEO_TS folder and burn it. when i put it in the dvd it brings up a file manager with VIDEO_TS but wont play anything. What am i doing wrong?

To need to convert it to DVD format first.

AVI2DVD is not a bad program to start off with. Google it!

As wagster says, your using the wrong formats.

Just dropping the .AVI into a VIDEO_TS folder will not work, you need to author a DVD before burning.

The AVI2DVD software should take your .AVI file and create a set of VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders for burning (with the NTI software) to a disc. The .AVI will be converted to a set of .VOBs (plus other files) and held within the VIDEO_TS folder.

Is it possible that your Nero is working okay and that the problem was you had not authored your DVD?

Intervideo (the WinDVD people) do a fantastic piece of software called DVDCopy 4.
    http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopy_Profile.jsp

It will copy DVDs and will burn AVI or DIVX encoded AVI files direct to DVD. It is simple to use and works first time every time. Plus you can get a 14 day trial download from the site.

I just noticed that they now have another Pro version of the same software that will render movies for PSP and iPod. I have no experience of this version so cannot recommend it. My recommendation is for the standard version.

    Hi
If you have Nero 7 this will encode your avi file to dvd for you. Open up Nero Vision and select your avi file, this will then encode to dvd format.
Quite a long process, and try not to have to many programs running, as video encoding is quite an intensive program.
I personally use tmpgenc 2.5 to encode, but there's lots of other encoders out there.
dvdsanta, winavi video converter, to name a few.

    Hope this helps

WinAVI is a 'quick an dirty' all in one converter, by quick think 2-3 hours instead of 10-12

The best thing is one of the newest DVD players that can play AVI's, however they will allways be playing codec catch up

  • Converting takes time, so if you are going to have to do this often you could consider getting an mpeg4 dvd player, i.e. one that plays avi files burned to discs without converting, as they can now be bought through many online retailers for about £25-30

But if it's just a one-off you can find all sorts of help for converting here -> http://www.videohelp.com/guides

my personal favourite software to do this is vso convertxtodvd

slightly off topic, but can anyone recommend a cheap dvd player that is either multi-region or easily hacked (no remote stuff) and plays divx?
