Dell Monitor

Not sure if this is really the forum but just wanted to bring this to others attention.

OH bought me a new Dell PC for Christmas which for various reasons did not arrive until after (not Dell's fault) and I did not set it up until end of January. Concentrating more on transferring info from old PC and setting up the new one (which is up and running perfectly) I dowloaded Belarc to establish my full specs.

Now, when we sorted the spec with Dell, I told them I already had a Dell All-in-one printer so did not want the free one on offer. I was given the opportunity of a 19" flat screen instead of the 17" one at an additional £20 which I accepted.

As the space where the monitor was to sit was limited I was surprised it fitted but assumed it was 19" wide not 19" top to bottom. Imagine my surprise when I measured it today and found it is 16 1/4" wide (black edge to edge, not screen) and just over 13" top to bottom. I looked at the Belarc specs which gave the monitor as a 17". I then looked at the model number on the back which is E196FP1 which is supposed to be 19".

Can someone tell me how Dell measure their monitors - if it is diagonally and screen only then Belarc is wrong. If it is by width then the label on my monitor giving the model number is wrong. Well something is!

I have e-mailed Dell (forwarding their offer and a screen print of the Belarc spec) and await their reply.

Have just seen the latest offers on Dell which show the arrows as measuring screens diagonally.

Also, realised the spec I was looking at was Dell's own prior to changing, not from the Belarc specs.

    Apologies to Dell.

All screens are measured diagonally (including TVs, monitors etc.). What you do get though is the size of the CRT or matrix which is partially hidden behind the frame so your actual screen may only be 18-18.5 inches (the rest being used to hold it in place)

CRT screens have part of the screen hidden behind the plastic, but TFT/LCDs do not.

As a general guide and obviously this will differ between manufacturers and models, a TFT sized screen is the equivalent of the next up CRT sized screen (e.g. 15" TFT = 17" CRT, 17" TFT = 19" CRT, etc.)

I don't see that the OP ha stated what type of monitor was being supplied, TFT/LCD or CRT, though the measurements are still diagonal.

  • My fil tried to order one of Dell's 'offers' this morning, he wanted dell dimension 1100 at the offer price of £299, buy now pay 2007.
He called Dell's number on the advert where they ran a credit check on him and said that he isn't eligable for buy now pay later but he could pay £29 now and £8.08 for the next 48 months at a rate of 29% apr!!

My oh's parents have always been careful with money and have no debts so i don't know how fil is not eligable for their 'offer'?

Also on their advert it states that the price of £299 includes vat and shipping costs, a totally different story when you try to order off their website- the same package came to a final cost of nearly £400, needless to say he told Dell where to stick it!!
