Buying small diesel estate. Astra or Focus or what?

Hello,
I need a small estate car as a hatchback is just too small now.
It must be diesel, have low running costs, low insurance group and be reliable.
What comes to mind is a Vauxhall Astra or a Ford Focus at no more than 1.7.
My budget is £4,500 max. but ideally under £4,000 and I'd like 2004 or newer and prefer low mileage naturally. If possible, I'd like it to be eco-friendly.
Would an Astra 1.7 diesel or 1.3 turbo diesel fit the bill better?
Are there other similar makes and models I should consider?
Thanks all.

A Renault Megane
Pug 307
2 for starters,.
Don't know where you are located but the auction place i keep an eye on in Leeds usually has a lot of Astra Estates going through.
e.g. VAUXHALL ASTRA 1.3 LIFE CDTI EST JUN 2006 35K 06 £3000
The astras are usually white (fashionable at the moment!). This is the lowest mileage one that went through lastmonth.
These seem to be the largest volume small estates that go through.

If you can haggle the current owners down from £5,000 to £4,500 you could get yourself a super reliable but slightly dull styling Skoda Octavia Estate 1.9TDi in a basic trim level.
Why does it have to be diesel?
Are you doing a lot of miles on the motorway?
Diesel does not always mean lower total cost of ownership, a petrol Octavia 1.8T (fast, but still returning 35+mpg) will not cost much more to fuel and can be bought for a whole £1,000 less than the diesel equivalent and you get a better trim level. You would have to cover roughly 50,000 miles in the diesel to break even assuming you run the car until it is worthles.0 -
The Astra will be bombproof, but the 1.3 will need revving to make it go.
however, a Renaukt Megane Tourer is bigger than most cars of this size.
I know this as my neighbour has a harp and it was the only small ish estate it would fit in.0 -
