did she move from another local authority school? If so, I think you'll find that the school job she moved from (if it is the same as she's doing now) will also have been downgraded to the same scale. I think there's protected salary for a couple of years which gives her time to look for a new job.

There is an appeals system - but as already been said - don't hold your breath.

She moved from retail into the school job.

She can not appeal for two reasons, 1) the appeal date has passed, even though she was never told about it and 2) the person who had the job before my girlfriend had the right to appeal but chose not to as she was leaving and had another job to go to. so as far as the local authority is concerned, the right to appeal was never taken up for that position!! They are not interested in the fact my girlfriend was never told about it. Not their problem!!!

She has no protected salary at all as she has only been there 5 months.

What gets me is, the local authority knew at the time of advertising this job that the salary would go down much more than the salary stated in the ad. So how do they get away with advertising a salary they have no intention of paying after a few months? They are nothing but lieing scum!!!

Welcome to the world of job evaluation in Local Authorities:rolleyes:

It's happening to all staff in every local authority. I think they had until April 2009 to have a system in place for JE but that didn't mean they had to introduce it then.

Typically white collar workers across all authorities are going down with staff like homecare, cleaners going up.

It doesn't matter if you've been in your job 5 minutes or 50 years they can just cut your pay and deny your appeal. The appeal process is a joke in LA anyway. A colleague appealed her job, went through each level to the final one of councillors on an appeal board and they refused her appeal but refused to give any reason for their refusal. That's it, end of line.

Unison is complacent in all in this JE. For one local authority the union even called it a "good news story" despite 600+ staff having a pay cut.

There is no 2 year protection with JE, it's with immediate effect.

Even though this has now kicked in, the local authority are still advertising jobs with stated salaries and including this little extra bit of info "Salary subject to Job Evaluation. Pay award pending".

But these jobs have already been evaluated, so they know the salary is different from the one they are stating in the job ad. THEY ARE LIEING!!! How can they get away with this????????

The Local Authority whom I work for have had a statement in their job adverts which says that they are currently conducting a pay review and salaries could be subject to change. Does your g/f have the original advert, or could she have missed this phrase in the original job applicaiton paperwork?

Also, Unions are involved both regionally & nationally.

Each Authority has worked this in different ways - they may not be able to advertise the job at the new rate as it may not have been graded.

Or more likely if your g/f has only just received a letter stating when it will change (90 days notice) then they cannot give new payrates until after that date.

Some of the jobs advertised have been graded, so they should state the new pay rate and state when it kicks in on job ads now, so new employees know exactly what they going to get and when! Or at least disclose it at interview stage before offering the job!!

As I stated, if your g/f has only just received her letter, the Authority are legally unable to give any detail of new salaries on job adverts or disclose at interview stage until after the date that information was given to staff.

Would you be comfortable knowing that a new starter knew what your salary was going to be before you did?

It isn't exactly a secret thing - it is happening throughout England, has been in the press quite a lot and has been ongoing for a couple of years.......and to be honest, it is something that most Authorities could reasonably expect new staff to be aware of purely from reading papers & watching or listening to news bulletins. I certainly was aware before I applied for my job 2 years ago, and I was not employed by another Authority.

Finally, if your g/f has only been in the job for 5 months, then she should have been made aware that this might happen and if she hasn't been then she needs to take that up with her departmental representative on the Authority's Pay Review group. Or maybe she was told and has either not remembered, or is too embarassed to admit that she didn't pay attention to that bit of information?

You were lucky to be in a previous job that gave you time to watch news and read papers. My girlfriend wasn't. 1.5 hour drive to work, if traffic was good, 12 - 14 hour shifts, then another 1.5 hour drive home. And thats when she didnt have to stay late. The only thing she wanted to do was go to bed when she got home.

She applied for the school job and got interviewed during a week off. She wasnt told a thing about the salary cut, she was told her salary would be matched, which it was until this cut!!! She has taken it up with whoever deals with it at her school. They were as surprised as she was at her salary cut as they had a list of who would be affected by this, and my girlfriend's name wasnt on that list!!!! The letter informing her came from the LA, not the school.

Well its done and there not a thing she can do about it.

At least we now know that the LA are liars and not to be trusted, and she'll be getting out of the job ASAP
