BT 12 month rolling contract - hard to escape?

Hi all

I just wanted some advice on BT's "rolling contract".

My understanding is at the end of the 12 month contract, you're automatically put onto another 12 month contract.

Is this the case?

If so, is it difficult to swap providers? When my contract runs out (in September) I'd like to swap to Tiscali/talk talk (or whoever is cheapest in September :money:) but do I need accurate timing to avoid finishing BT too soon and paying 2 companies, or ending up with no phone line?
(i.e. can I tell a new provider to wait until BT have finished?)

Advice from anyone with experience of leaving BT's contract and swapping providers much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Martyn

According to BT, this is the process...
Customers are very clearly reminded in writing with around 30 days notice when their contract is coming up for renewal that they will be entering into a new 12-month period unless say that they do not wish to do so. If they wish to leave at this point, they can without charge.

So hopefully this is what will happen.

    Good luck

after the initial 12 months your put on to another 12 month one unless you request to be put on a 1 month rolling contract, i think they require 28 days to quit.
you can cancel whilst in the 12 month contract for £70, wether you would want to do this depends if the savings or benefits of the other company make it worth while.

You can contact BT and have the renewal part of your contract cancelled, so that the contract isn't renewed at the end of the 12 months, but if you don't tranfer suppliers then you would just pay the standard price for the package after the minimum term has expired.

The other option is to place your order with the other supplier at least 14 days before the contract renews (although you should at least give a couple of extra days on top of the 14, just to be safe).
If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.
