In debit balance with BT - how to rectify

Hi,
I have recently had my quarterly bill from BT telling me that they are doubling my monthly payment to £80 because I have a debit balance of £172. this is a hang over from last year when I did some work for a friend which needed me to use the phone and stupidly, although I claimed for the calls, didn't use this money to pay the phone bill - I admit I've not been paying attention to the bills as they have come. Now that I look back the last three quarterly bills were also showing a large debit balance.
My partner is having kittens about this and I am cross with myself. How can I best rectify this without it crippling us every month? If I pay off the debit balance in full will they allow our monthly payments to return to what they were?
any advice? please don't tell me to change provider - I know I should do that and will definitely look into it once I've sorted this thing out.
cheers

No advice on the bill side of things but it sounds like you need to familiarise yourself with the savings available via www.18185.co.uk - 5p per UK 01/02/03 call (of unlimited duration) at all times.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

you should be able to phone BT and pay the debt off over the phone with a credit or debit card, then your monthly direct debit will remain the same.
if the larger DD has already been set up cancel it with your bank0 -
You wouldn't be able to change provider anyway until you clear any debt with them.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi saveandgetfit08,
Yes If you pay off the full outstanding balance your monthly payments will stay the same.
You can also pay off part of the bill. It wont keep your payments the same as they are but it will reduce the monthly payments from £80 and if you are paying a bit less off it wont hurt your pocket quite as much either!
I have sent you a PM asking for a few details so I can have a look at you account and see whats what.
Cheers
Craig
