My mother and Cam belt problems!!!!

My mum bought a 10 year old Renault Megane from my partners step-father 2 months ago for £650.

Now for that price I expect there to be a few problems....

The cam belt snapped today while she was driving (even though a completely new one was put in 2 months ago) and she has gone completely mad and says she never wants to drive the car again even though my partners step father has promised to fix everything that is wrong with it.

She is now mad at me because I seem to think that that offer is good because she won't get a lot for it if she sells it - especially in its current condition. As far as I'm concerned a £650 car is going to have a few problems. However as this is all in the family it is going to cause a few problems.

My partner bought a 12 year old Renault Clio for £450 off his step dad and we have had to fix a few thing but I expect to!

Is it just me or is my mum being completely unreasonable? (wouldn't be the first time mind)

Mothers! Who'd have them

10 year old Renaults were in the phase when Renault made the worst possible cars in terms of reliability.

thats a side issue here, dont really know what advice the op wants though!
  • Your mum is being a typical illogical female. My advice - have nothing whatsoever to do with the situation. Leave well alone, and let her deal with it.

Your step dad is doing the honourable thing, and I think he comes out well from this.
Fraid your Mum is being irrational and illogical Mr Spock

We bought a Range Rover (worst vehicle ever) within 6 months had blown the head gaskets twice, needed a new gearbox and a new transfer box and a starter motor

Could have bought a decent one for the amount we spent on it

If the cam belt has snapped and taken out the big ends, it will be un-repairable.

Regardless of who she is, belts snap, problems happen, and motors are sold as seen no matter whi they are sold too..... which is why i never sell to mates.

You haven't mentioned mileage, how much it had on it at purchase, how much she has placed on it since and how much maintenance has happened since. Regardless of what the paper work says, people need to check second hand cars thoroughly and not trust what the service past says.

Big ends will be fine it's those little valves at the top you should be worrying about ;)

Seriously though a common error is to replace the belt and not the tensioners or idlers that can cause just as much damage if they fail.
