I moved into my current address a few months back and today have tried the phone line. There is a dial tone but upon dialling a number it says no recognised, dialling 150 doesn't work but dialling 999 does. I have spoken to BT and TalkTalk, BT have said it's disconnected at the exchange and want the usual £125 and TalkTalk have said it's either disconnected or run by a cable company. Where I live there isn't any cable services and I can't see how it's disconnected from the exchange when I have a dial tone.
I'd like to find out who was the last company to manage the line, the previous owner won't have a clue and I don't have any paperwork or such.
Any help would be much appreciated....

Dialling 17070 should get you the allocated telephone number.
You didn't really dial 999 to 'test' the line did you?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I'll try that number tomorrow, however I found a number for the house in an old telephone book, upon ringing that it says not recognised.
'999' was a moment of madness, didn't let it ring (not a full one), unplugged phone after that!0 -
instead of having a dead line now when the line is inactivate you get "soft dial tone" so you can ring 999 etc, you'll need to get it activated0
