Fuel Consumption
Hi All
I have a Q, which method would be most efficient use of petrol. I drive to work, and there are 2 quite different routes, and I would like your opinions on which would be more efficient driving route.
a) Route A, is along country lanes, and very few traffic lights, but is 9.5 miles, or
b) Route B is shorter and is only 6.9 miles but part of it is through the city, and so has traffic lights and queues.
So which route is the better one?
Cheers for yr answers

why dont you try them each for a week and see?
id guess theyre similar , the longer route would be more mpg due to less stopping0 -
I'd generally i'd say longer, but its impossible to say as there are so many other variables.
As steve suggested the only way to really find out is try each one for a week!
I have a choice of routes. I always go the longer as it is more economical, fun, quicker and less stressfull than trawling past all the schools etc.0 -
Whichever irritated me less. I like to keep moving so personally I would probably choose the country lanes assuming they were similar on time. Fuel use would not be my prime concern as it is probably six and half a dozen.0

I couldn't say about fuel consumption but chances are driving on the country lanes are going to be better for your car. The stop start of city driving wears cars out faster.0

Route A more effecient.
But I'd use route B all the way, maybe not very money saving freindly but a lot less frustrating.0 -
Fuel use I'd guess to be pretty similar for both, if the travel time is also similar for both, I'd take route A which is healthier for the car.0

As others have said I'd take the longer, country lane route, less wear and tear on the driver!0

Route A will probably be slightly better, but like others have said, try them both and check it yourself. The other thing to bear in mind, route A will save wear and tear on your gearbox, brakes etc. Not such an immediate money-saving thing as the fuel, but over a long period it could make quite a difference. Same reason that quite often, a car with 100K on the clock that's spent all it's life on a motorway can be far better than the same car that's only done 30K running to the local shops and back.0

Thanks everyone for your ideas.
I hadnt thought of the wear and tear to the gear box etc, so I shall be using the longer, but lovelier route
