Switching energy supplier - what to do?

hi,
I'm going to say goodbye to British Gas and join a cheaper company (probably npower). I can fill out the form online at the new suppliers website but do I need to inform/give notice to BG beforehand? How does it work?
if yes - do I need to give notice i.e. today, wait 30 days or so and join npower after that time?
I just do not want to pay twice for one service.

If you wish to switch supplier, just apply for the new supply with the new supplier (or via a cashback or switching site). The new supplier will inform your existing supplier.

Your old supplier may contact you with a 'sorry you are leaving' letter, just to make sure you it was you that applied for the new supplier. Also the new supplier should contact you to confirm the deal (and allow you a cooling off period)
It'll take about 4-6 weeks for the switch to occur. Your new supplier will give you the exact date. It's good to supply a meter reading to the new supplier on that date ... and also worthwhile telling your existing supplier that meter reading too so that there's no dispute over the final bill from them (but you don't have to as the new supplier should give the old supplier this reading anyway)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... So I do not have to even contact British gas (and explain why I'm leaving)?
the 30 or whatever notice period will be probably applied when the new company contacts them?
That's easy

That's right.

Part of the reason it takes 4-6weeks for the switch to take place is that it includes the necessary notice to end your current supply contract (which your new supplier will give your old supplier on your behalf)"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
