we are currently looking to buy our son a laptop. he uses it mainly for the internet and storing music and such but he wants it to play world of warcraft and warhammer 40,000.
the laptop we have seen is as follows
dell inspiron
BASE
intel pentium dual core processer T4200(2.0GHz, 800MHz, 1 MB cache memory
MEMORY
4096 mb dual channel DDR2 SD RAM (2x2048) hard drive
WEBCAM
1.3 megapixels
HARD DRIVE
250 GB (5400 rpm)serial ATA hard drive
GRAPHIC CARD
intel intergrated GMA 4500mhd
with the option to upgrade to
256mb ATI mobility Radeon HD4330 for £50

is this any good for what he wants it for. we have up to £450 to spend

thanks

If its just for gaming then get the lowest spec machine that meets the games minimum requirements.

You can pick up deccent machines for about 300-350

    Look on ebuyer and dell

world of warcraft will run on just about any new laptop.

    Its specs are tiny.

Just hope he does not get addicted to the game.

The latest expansion brought a number of graphical updates to the game and slaughters computers, even ones with high end processors and graphics cards are experiencing quite a variance in framerates..

Any reason why the preference is for a laptop? You'll get a better computer that will be upgradeable and a better investment for the money than you would do with a laptop..

I managed to and was playing it for about 2 years! Its a VERY addictive and immersive game.

I agree with anewhope though, best off going for a desktop PC as you get more for your money, and its a lot more easy to upgrade in the future.

If you still want to go down the laptop route, ebuyer, dell and aria are probably your best bet but also check dabs out as well.

    Hope that helps

  • While WoW and Warhammer will run on the laptop above it wont be that pritty with the Intel GMA chip.

Those chips really were not designed for gaming, I'd estimate an ingame FPS of ~15 for WoW, Warhammer probably less. Cant really expect much with a RAM shareing GPU.

with the ATI upgrade you'd be looking at the ability to play with a few graphics settings increased but its still fairly restricted in the world of GPUs,

in comparison to the one you suggested I found this

    ebuyer.com/product/160503

its currently £15 over budget but it has a better CPU, GPU and larger Hard Drive

for a Notebook GPU comparison here

    notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

lists pritty much every one on the market atm

you might need to stick the three w's on the front of them, being a new user I cant post working links
