1280 and BT anytime

Just applied for BT anytime and despite BT saying they would get back to me within 48 hours they never did. I phoned customer service and girl there said I was now on anytime so assumed I could use it. However a few days later received a letter from BT welcoming my calls back to BT and advising the service would be up and running on 14th April. If I wanted to take advantage of the service now I could use the 1280 access code before numbers.

I used 1899 to make most of my calls over the BT network, but looking on the internet can't see how using 1280 will give me the free anytime service.

Was appalled at the standard of BT customer service who didn't seem to have much of an idea what 1280 was, and that was the UK call centre. The Indian call centre were just trying to sell me the anytime service again till I was eventually cut-off.

Anyone any clues what this 1280 code does? Don't want to paying inflated BT daytime rates when I can still use 1899.

If your line rental is with BT and your calls are with another supplier the BT 1280 access code allows you to place selected calls with BT,and they will come out of your BT inclusive minutes.. It does not work if your current call supplier is Talk Talk or Sky Talk, they will charge you their rates.

Thanks for that. I have never effectively left BT.

My line rental is with BT but I use 1899 for most calls although some are dialled directly through BT so I do not need to dial 1280 to get onto the BT network I can just dial the numbers directly without the access code.

The way I read the letter was that if I put 1280 before the number I would not pay for the calls ie I would be on BT anytime, if I just dialled the number without an access code I would pay for the calls at the normal rate until 14th April.

Perhaps BT are not aware I am still with them, now that wouldn't surprise me.

Your calls are still with BT even though you have been using an indirect access code, so 1280 is of no use to you.

Are you registered for online billing if so this will give you the up to date position on what tariff you are currently on.

PS. Sister company www.18185.co.uk offers better rates then 1899 for most destinations eg UK Mobiles.;)

As I thought, BT must think I'm with another provider but one look at my bill and they would see I am still with BT.

Not currently on online billing but will be shortly.

to quote from their letter "you can start to take advantage of your BT discount straight away by dialling 1280 before each call"

I think my frustration is with the customer service whom seem totally clueless and unable to answer my query:- "can I now make free calls"?
