Faulty Monitor - Samsung and Retailer diggings heels in - Help!

Hello,

In August of last year I purchased a Samsung Syncmaster 710T from an online retailer (not sure if I'm allowed to say who). I've recently noticed horizontal lines running through the screen and also a permenant thick white line near to the top of the screen. I phoned Samsung and was told I need to test it on another pc (yeah, we all have spare pc's hanging around), then get new leads (so I'm expected to buy these?) and try that, and then check my video card. If the fault's still there they will exchange it for a reconditioned model. I can't believe I pay over £200 for a monitor to be offer an recon 6 months later! Is this the norm? So I thought I'd try the retailer to be told it's out of their hands and my warranty now lies with Samsung, I thought a company was liable upto a year of purchase. Does anyone know what my rights are? Thanks

As far as I am aware the retailer can not fob you off like this ... they sold it and are therefore responsible for ensureing that it is fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality .. in this case it appears there is a problem. Since it is past the 6 months mark then the onus has switched to you to show there is a problem.

Is there nobody in your neghbourhood that has a PC that you could try plugging it into or even one in work (we do that all the time .. try our busted bits out on the PCs i nwork). It could be your graphics card or cable which is what Samsung is trying to determine. Personally I would push this with the retailer and tell them that it does not appear to be working and ask if they could plug it into one of their PCs (just to check it out).

  • the retailer has responsibility upto 6 years. they are fobbing you off, you should be dealing with them not samsung. You shouldnt have a problem taking it into the store, and trying it there.

With the recon thing, its kinda grey area i think. They have to replace like for like, so they are replacing a used monitor with a used monitor as yours is now 6 months old. If it was like a month old they would prob give you a brand new one.

I think the retailer doesn't have to replace the monitor, but get it sent away for repair. This may mean you will be without monitor for a significant amount of time.

Re naming the retailer, I think you can, it might even be helpful, as others on the board my have experience on how to deal with the retailer in question.

Unfortunately I can't take it into a shop as I bought it from an online retailer (https://www.digiuk.com)

Just tell them you have tested it on another PC - I know its a white lie but...! Tell them the fault is still there and ask them to switch it for another one! Its better than nothing! Either that or go on at the retailer!

So what is the difference between a normal lie and a white lie?
