Student Scholarship

Help, please this is my first post and I need some guidance on what I need to include in the application for a university scholarship for my son.
He is hoping to study engineering at one of the Edinburgh uni's and has been told of a scholarship by the interviewer he met on an open day. The form is straight forward but does ask for a personal statement of support ? What should he include ??

Your son needs to find out what and who the scholarship is for -
Is awarded for academic ability, health, social cicumstances....?
Is it intended for general use or books, trips,....?

I applied (and recieved) a scholarship grant when I went to university the first time. On the application I put how the money would be useful to me:- able to take up more opportunities otherwise barred to me because of cost, allow me to get the most out of my time at university etc...

Does he need a reference? My 6th form tutor did a reference for my application which basically said I worked hard, was a credit to the school and would make the most of every opportunity given to me.

Remember, it's his application and they want to see his personality shine from the application.

Thanks for your reply, the scholarship appears to be a general one.
I believe in his interview he said he wanted to compete in some mountain bike races and represent the university if they had a team so this will be additional to his personal statement.
