small slate roof.

Options
I have an outrigger that forms my kitchen with a slate pitched roof.

The roof is in bad need of repair, but I have no spare money, can't remortgage as I don't have enough equity in the house, and I don't want to get a secured loan as the only place I will likely get one is places such as Welcome/Ocean/GE Money/Provident, and we all know what the interest rates are like from them.

So as I now at home all day as I have lost my job due to them closing down (no redundancy as yet as they just shut up and left without bye or leave), I'm looking for a way to get the roof repaired for as little money as possible, and I thought this would be the best place to go.

The lead at the top of the roof where it meets the main part of the house needs replacing, but my dad has a roll I can have so thats that sorted.

I have quite a few broken slates, but I am unable to replace them as I literally have no spare cash.

A friend said to just bitumen felt the roof over the slate, can I do this?

Is there anything I can do that costs very little money?

Do local councils still offer the home improvement loans where they loan you the money for a share in your property of the same value?

Any help would be very much appreciated

I would lift the tiles off the roof carefully and place roofing felt down then place the tiles back on the roof. I would then try to source some second hand tiles to complete the roof I know you have no money but if you do it on the cheap you pay twice.

If it is a slate roof you are talking about and not a clay/cement tiles then only remove the broken slates if you try lifting the others you will break a fair amount as they are nailed down.
If you are fairly competent at DIY it should be cheaper to replace the slates with reclaimed or Spanish,Chinese, Brazilian slates(50% cheaper than Welsh in most cases) you will need a slate ripper http://www.tooled-up.com/MicroCategory.asp?CID=12&MAN=Slaters-Ripper&MCID=1790&SCID=134 to remove the broken bits of slate and any nails that are still secured to any battens.
You can secure them in place with Gripfill.
You could also use some adhesive flashing strips to put over and under the broken slates as a temporary(should last at least 10 years) measure, they come in different sizes and by different names such as flash band or http://www.wickes.co.uk/Aluminium-Flashing/Hi-Tack-Flashing-Strip/invt/243008

as a temp measure you could certainly remove all the slates and fix some plywood instead. then cover with roofing felt.
felt is fairly cheap (10 quid) and the plywood can be found about free, if you look hard enough.
    Get some gorm.

I would be surprised if any of the suggestions about recovering your roof with other materials is going to be ay cheaper and certainly not more effective than going down to your local builder's reclamation yard and getting a few slates. Then go to your local roofing place and get a few plastic slate hangers that cost pence. These hook over the tile above and have a ratchet kind of arrangement like cable ties that will hold the bottom of the tile. You can then slide in the new tile in place of the old. If your roof is relatively shallow you may find that removing the old one will simply allow you to slide a new one in without any fixing, but this should only be seen as a temporary measure. For even more saving stop off the next time you see someone having their slate roof replaced with modern composite slate and ask if you could have a few of the old ones.

Round here , the cost of second hand slate tiles is enormous. I reckon any roofer will jealously guard the slates they remove.
