BT Line Still Active

Hi,
We have just collected the keys to a place we are renting and I've just tried out the phone line and it's still active. I was expecting the line to have been disconnected as the last people moved out in November, however, there was a dial tone, and when I tried calling my mobile, my mobile rang (didn't answer it though). Is this normal? Will it cause problems with getting the line activated in my name?
Thanks

No, you just have to call BT and tell them you are taking over the line from this date. The previous occupier must have neglected to close the account and no doubt you will get the bills in their name to your address. Make sure BT are aware of this.No free lunch, and no free laptop

This happen to me but BT said only the bill payer can cancel the line. I said his disappeared and you will never get paid. I was offering to take over the line but they would not have any of it. I never used the phone for 12 months and the bills keep coming. Silly BT!0
